How to Swap Your Skincare for the Summer

It’s that time of year again, you’ve wiped the old sand off the beach chairs sitting in your garage and you’re assessing last year’s supply of sunscreen to see what’s expired and what you still have on hand. But wait! Your sunscreen shouldn’t be the only skincare product that grabs your attention this summer.

Skincare fans know that you don’t just wear sunscreen in the summer – you should wear it all year round! Similarly, we know that not all skincare thrives in warm and sunny temperatures. Today, Spa Medical Aesthetic Specialist, Victoria Austin, is here to share with you a few tips when it comes to swapping out your summer skincare.

Questions to Ask When Assessing
Your Summer Skincare

  1. Does it have retinol in it? – It’s a common misconception that you shouldn’t use retinol in the summer months due to sensitivity to the sun that accompanies this product. However, there’s a simple solution – apply your retinol at night and be sure to use your sunscreen during the day! Doing so allows you to reap the benefits of this anti-aging agent while protecting your skin from sensitivity.
  2. Am I prone to oily or acenic skin? – Consistently warm and humid temperatures, especially here in Central Georgia, can cause excess sweat and oil on the skin. Make sure to combat clogged pores and oily skin by considering adding a product with salicylic acid to your regimen. Look specifically for cleansers and toners that can do double duty to purge your skin of excess oil.
  3. Am I double cleansing? – The answer to this question should always be yes but especially in the summer months when an excess amount of dirt and sweat on the skin can clog pores. Make sure to double cleanse every morning and evening for healthy, clean skin.
  4. Do I have melasma or pigmentation I am looking to address? – For those actively addressing or thinking about addressing pigmentation, now is a good time to talk to your aesthetician about hydroquinone or other pigment treatment regimens. For many patients, it may be wise to wait until the fall to begin this treatment but the best way to be sure is to speak with a skincare specialist like your aesthetician.
  5. Do I have a Vitamin C product in my regimen? – Vitamin C is a staple of most skincare regimens. This natural ingredient can help neutralize the skin’s reaction to UVA and UVB rays and in turn reduce skin irritation, pigmentation, and aging from sun damage. Keep in mind, for those with more sensitive skin, this product can cause mild irritation. When in doubt, consult your favorite aesthetician!

How Do I Know What Products Are
Right for Me?

With so many questions to consider and an abundance of products available online, it can be hard to know what products to use. Buying skincare online, especially medical-grade skincare, can be a risk to see if your third-party seller has diluted or changed the products or if they are outdated to sell at a discounted price. So, what’s the best way to find out what products are right for you? Book your complimentary skin consultation with the Spa Medical team!
