Are lines around your mouth making you look older?

As we age, even the finest of lines can seem obvious in delicate areas like our lips or mouth. And let’s face it, lines age our appearance. The lips are one of the most expressive facial features, as well as the most active muscles in our face. Repeated consonant sounds in conversation create vertical lip lines, sometimes called smoker’s lines, which over time, remain etched in the skin.  These lines are the most common complaint we hear from women over the age of 45. Take charge of your lip lines with Spa Medical’s expertise in lip enhancement options.

Signs You’re Ready for Smile Line Treatment

Because most types of smile lines develop gradually, it’s often hard to recognize the point at which you’re ready for treatment. These are some of the signs our patients describe most often before they come in for a consultation:

  • Lines around your mouth are visible even when your face is at rest, not just when you’re smiling or speaking
  • Lipstick bleeds or feathers into the fine lines above your upper lip
  • You look more tired or older than you actually feel
  • The corners of your mouth seem to turn downward, giving your face a resting frown
  • Deep folds run from your nose to the edges of your mouth, adding years to your appearance
  • You’ve noticed that no skincare product seems to make a dent in these lines

If any of those signs define your situation, you may be at the point where a smile line treatment will have the greatest impact. Volume loss and repeated muscle movement work together over time to etch these lines into your skin, and topical products alone can’t reverse that process. The good news is that effective, natural-looking solutions exist, and they’re right here in Middle Georgia.

What Treatments Enhance Lips?

Treatment of lines around the mouth, as well as lips, is a multifaceted approach. We look at the definition and proportion of the lips with all lip treatments in order to create a natural, smooth, appealing lip shape.

  1. BOTOX®
    1. BOTOX® Cosmetic is sometimes the best treatment to control muscle movement, which causes smoker’s lines. Neuromodulators like Botox®, injected in small amounts every 10 weeks, can reduce the lines and prevent new ones from forming. Depending on the depth and age of the lines, dermal filler is used to create structural support and fill the deeper lines.
  2. JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA®
    1. JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler precisely engineered to give lips subtle enhancement and correct the fine lines and wrinkles that form around the mouth. Volbella’s versatility makes it ideal for more than plumping your pout. Take years off your appearance by smoothing out smoker’s lines and filling in deeper wrinkles.
  3. Restylane®
    1. Restylane® is specifically created to correct moderate-to-severe nasolabial folds and marionette lines or give lips a robust enhancement. If you’re more concerned about the size and shape of your lips, or deeper smoker’s lines, however, Restylane® Silk is specific to areas of the face with more movement. Silk moves well with your expressions for beautiful, naturally full lips.

What Results Will I See?*

The beauty of dermal fillers is that the results are immediate. This helps Terri Harper, MSN, FNP-C, owner and clinical director of Spa Medical, to artistically place the best filler of choice in the correct location for the most natural enhancement. Depending on the type of filler you’ve chosen to reduce lines and enhance your lips, your results will last 6 months or maybe longer.

Is There Any Downtime?

Most of Spa Medical’s family of fillers are infused with lidocaine, so each injection is less painful than the one before. Some patients still may experience injection site tenderness, redness, or bruising, which usually resolves within a few hours or a day or two.

Spa Medical’s experienced injection specialists use artistic ability and conservative techniques have helped hundreds of women enhance their lip appearance and smooth away smoker’s lines to turn the clock back by years. That’s why they’ve been awarded the Diamond level Brilliant Distinction by Allergan, makers of Juvéderm®. Only 2% of the most elite clinics in the country can make this claim.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lip and Smile Line Treatment

What causes smile lines and vertical lip lines?

Smile lines, including nasolabial folds and marionette lines, develop from a combination of repeated facial movement, collagen loss and volume reduction that naturally occurs with age. Vertical lip lines, sometimes called smoker’s lines, form above the upper lip from the repetitive motion of speaking, smiling and pursing the lips.

Can lip and smile lines be treated without surgery?

Yes, and for the vast majority of patients, nonsurgical treatment is the preferred approach. A combination of neuromodulators like Botox and hyaluronic acid dermal fillers like Juvéderm Volbella or Restylane can significantly reduce both fine and deep lines around the mouth without surgery.

How long do results last?

Results vary depending on the treatment used and each patient’s unique circumstances (including age, skin quality, concerns, etc.). Botox around the lips is typically repeated every 10 weeks to maintain muscle relaxation and prevent new lines from forming. Dermal fillers in this area generally last six months or longer, with some formulations providing results for up to 12 months.

Will my lips look natural after treatment?

Natural results are the goal and the standard at Spa Medical. Terri takes a conservative, proportional approach to every injectable treatment, particularly around the lips, where too much product is immediately obvious. The aim is to soften lines, restore definition and enhance volume in a way that looks like a better version of you.

Is there a difference between smile lines and smoker's lines?

Yes, though they’re related. Smile lines most commonly refer to nasolabial folds, which are the creases that run from the sides of your nose down to the corners of your mouth, and marionette lines, which extend below the corners of the mouth. Smoker’s lines (also called perioral lines or vertical lip lines) are the fine vertical creases that appear directly above and around the lips.

What should I do to prepare for treatment?

Your provider will give you specific pre-treatment instructions during your consultation. In general, patients are advised to avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements for about one week prior to your appointment, as these can increase bruising. Arrive with clean skin and no makeup. Staying well-hydrated in the days before your appointment also supports better results.

Can I combine lip and smile line treatment with other services?

Absolutely. Many patients pair lip and smile line treatment with treatments for crow’s feet, frown lines or overall volume loss for a more comprehensive refresh. Spa Medical offers a full range of injectables and cosmetic treatments across all three locations.
