When that warm flush gives way to stubborn redness, or when the freckles that were endearing before become prominent dark spots, light touch-ups may not be enough. Thankfully, Lumecca IPL (intense pulsed light) by Spa Medical offers a gentle yet highly effective way to address sun damage, skin discoloration and other common skin issues without extensive downtime. Delivered through our InMode Optimas platform at all three Spa Medical locations, Lumecca is one of the most powerful IPL treatments for restoring beautifully clear and even-toned skin.
Lumecca IPL is an energy-based photofacial treatment that uses precise pulses of broad-spectrum light to target specific chromophores (pigment-bearing molecules) in the skin. Melanin, which is responsible for brown spots and hyperpigmentation, and hemoglobin, which is responsible for red vascular lesions, are the primary targets. When those chromophores absorb the light, the controlled heat breaks down the unwanted cells through a process called photothermolysis. The body then naturally clears the cells away over the following weeks.
A built-in sapphire cooling tip protects the skin’s surface and keeps you comfortable throughout every Lumecca treatment. Most patients describe the sensation as a brief, warm snap, and many can tolerate the treatment without any numbing topicals.
What sets Lumecca apart from most IPL devices is its exceptionally high power output. It delivers significantly more energy in the 500–600 nm wavelength range than standard IPL systems, meaning it targets pigmented cells with a much higher degree of precision and efficiency. This means better results in fewer sessions than with alternative options.
Our team at Spa Medical uses Lumecca IPL to treat:
Sun Damage & Age Spots: Lumecca breaks down these concentrated pigment deposits, and as the skin’s natural cellular turnover does its work over the following weeks, those spots gradually flake and fade away.
Facial Redness & Rosacea: Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition with no definitive cure, but the reddening and visible capillaries that accompany it respond very well to phototherapy treatments like Lumecca IPL. Research published in The Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that after up to four IPL treatment sessions, patients with vascular and pigmented rosacea demonstrated significant aesthetic improvement based on physician-assessed outcomes.
Facial & Spider Veins: Small lesions that affect the face, including broken capillaries, facial spider veins, angiomas and others, all contain hemoglobin that readily absorbs Lumecca’s light energy.
Freckles & Hyperpigmentation: If you’re bothered by the concentration or distribution of your freckles, Lumecca IPL can be precisely calibrated to selectively lighten the affected areas without disturbing the surrounding skin.
Dull Complexion: Beyond addressing specific lesions, the light energy produced by Lumecca IPL encourages collagen activity and circulation, which work together over time to support a brighter and more even complexion.
“Photoaging,” or premature skin concerns caused by sun exposure, is associated with a number of common concerns that Lumecca IPL can address, including sun spots and persistent redness. However, being a fit candidate for Lumecca also requires certain general health and lifestyle criteria to be met.
You are likely a strong candidate if you:
Lumecca is not recommended for patients who are pregnant or lactating, who have a recent tan or active sun exposure, or who are taking photosensitizing medications. Patients with very dark skin tones may be better served by alternative options; this is a conversation your Spa Medical provider will have openly with you during consultation.
Terri Harper, MSN, APRN, NP-C, Spa Medical’s founder and nationally and internationally recognized educator on minimally invasive cosmetic treatments, leads a team with over two decades of hands-on clinical experience. Whether you’re seen in Macon, Perry or Madison, you’re in the care of licensed, medically trained professionals who understand the nuances behind patient-centered, fully personalized energy-based treatments like Lumecca IPL.
Every successful treatment plan begins with a consultation appointment, where we will assess your skin quality, discuss your concerns and expectations with you, and determine your candidacy for treatments like Lumecca IPL.
On the day of your session, you’ll arrive with clean, makeup-free skin. Your provider may apply a cool gel to the treatment area before passing the Lumecca handpiece over the skin in a series of controlled pulses. Most full-face treatments take 20 to 30 minutes. The sapphire cooling tip keeps the surface temperature consistently controlled throughout your session for your comfort.
Most patients benefit from one to three sessions spaced three to four weeks apart. Pigmented concerns like age spots typically respond faster than vascular lesions such as rosacea-related redness, which may require additional sessions depending on severity. Your provider will outline a realistic timeline at your consultation.
Immediately after your session, expect mild redness and warmth in the treated area, similar to a mild sunburn. These effects typically resolve within an hour or two. Over the next one to three days, any targeted brown spots will darken before they begin to flake and fade. This is a normal part of the process that indicates the treatment is working.
Significant improvement is visible within two to three weeks of treatment, with the best results typically surfacing around four to six weeks after your final session. For rosacea-related redness, the clinical literature points to treatment plans that involve multiple sessions (typically a minimum of three) to produce consistently improving results.
If it isn’t already, daily sunscreen use needs to be a non-negotiable part of your daily routine. Your provider will give you detailed aftercare instructions, but the general guidelines include:
Pairing Lumecca with a medical-grade skincare regimen helps keep your results consistent over the long term. Our team can recommend products suited to your skin type and concerns at your consultation.

How many Lumecca treatments will I need? Most patients with pigmented concerns like sun spots or age spots see significant improvement in one to two sessions. Vascular concerns such as rosacea or facial spider veins typically require two to three treatments.
How is Lumecca different from standard IPL? Lumecca delivers significantly higher power than conventional IPL systems, allowing it to treat the same concerns more effectively in fewer sessions. Where standard IPL often requires four to six treatments for photo rejuvenation, most Lumecca patients achieve their results in one to three sessions.
Can Lumecca be combined with other treatments? Yes, Lumecca pairs very well with other services offered at Spa Medical. Many patients combine it with Botox or neurotoxins for a comprehensive facial rejuvenation approach, or with microneedling with radiofrequency to address both pigmentation and skin texture in a phased treatment plan. Your provider will advise on the ideal combination and spacing based on your goals.
Who should not get Lumecca IPL? Lumecca is not appropriate for pregnant or breastfeeding patients, those with a recent tan or active sun exposure, patients currently taking photosensitizing medications, or those with very dark skin tones (Fitzpatrick V–VI) without an assessment.
Can Lumecca treat areas other than the face? Yes. Lumecca is effective on the neck, chest (décolletage) and hands, all of which are prone to visible sun damage and age spots. If you have pigmentation concerns beyond the face, mention them at your consultation so your provider can plan accordingly.
